Tools of the Oceanographer

Studies in marine science are no better than the equipment used, the sampling technique, and the technician him/herself. In order to gather data in the oceans, many specialized pieces of equipment have been designed and used by marine scientists from all disciplines. Some are very accurate and dependable and others are not. Some are very simple and some are quite complex.

The most common pieces of equipment, used by marine scientists all over the world, are pictured in this lesson. These are the "tools" that allow the scientists to take samples, measurements and see things better so that accurate information can be recorded. A big THANKS to Sue Williams, SBCC Division Aid, who took most of the images (including a 6 inch scale) of the SBCC oceanographic equipment.
